May 11, 2009 -- In celebration of its 20th anniversary, Putnam Associates (www.putassoc.com), a strategy consulting firm to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, has published The First Twenty Years Are the Hardest: Two Decades in Healthcare Strategy, a collection of essays from a cross section of experts in healthcare. Authors, including biopharmaceutical executives, venture capitalists, physicians, and seasoned strategy consultants, provide insights, background and recommendations regarding the complex and interwoven industries of healthcare. The book tackles a diverse set of business problems facing healthcare executives today, including: What is the optimal way to manage risk and innovation? How are pharmaceutical companies, big and small, dealing with globalization, threats from generics, and drying up pipelines? What has changed in the relationships between doctors, managed care, the government and biopharma, and how will they continue to evolve? What factors have contributed to rising healthcare costs, and how should they be addressed? Where does the future of this power struggle lie?

"Over the past twenty years we have participated along with our clients in some profound changes in the healthcare industries. Biotechnology has evolved from theory to a mainstay of cutting edge therapies. Diseases that were death sentences can now be treated as chronic conditions. Global level consolidation in the pharmaceutical industry has roiled competitive landscapes. Managed care has become the predominant form of health insurance in this country and has driven economic considerations of disease treatment to the forefront of decision making," states Kevin J. Gorman, Managing Partner, Putnam Associates.
