Background: My interest in Putnam Associates was sparked by its focus on healthcare. I became intrigued by healthcare even before I started business school, but ‘healthcare’ is a broad term so I wanted to learn more. Putnam Associates provides exactly this type of learning opportunity. Our projects touch every part of the healthcare industry including patients, payers, physicians, hospitals and drug manufacturers. Within these areas we interact with the most important decision makers, cutting edge companies and prominent organizations. Furthermore, Putnam’s projects demand an understanding of medicine and science. This requires me and my colleagues to balance our business knowledge with clinical knowledge when advising clients. It makes our work interesting and diverse.
I chose Putnam largely because of its culture too. The small company environment allows me to take advantage of all my MBA skills right away. Coming in at the Consultant level, I was immediately impressed with the level of responsibility I received. People here set high expectations for themselves and their team members. My colleagues are incredibly bright and hardworking. The strength of project teams makes it possible to learn from each other and grow your skills at a rapid pace. However, everyone also understands the importance of finding the right work-life balance and spending time outside of work doing what you love. While I get to enjoy the benefits of travel and interacting with clients on a regular basis, I am not forced to live in a hotel room four nights per week. I believe this balance is only possible at a small, collegial firm like Putnam.

Background: After an internship and a full-time job at two broad-based strategy consulting firms, I decided I wanted to work at a firm with a focused expertise and high growth potential. I ultimately joined Putnam Associates after researching a number of other companies. During my time here, I have been impressed with the people, the challenge of dealing with a wide variety of strategic issues faced by pharmaceutical and biotech companies, and the customized approach that Putnam applies to solving each client engagement.
Putnam builds and keeps long-term client relationships. These relationships allow Putnam to be involved very closely with the actual decision makers such that each case is a collaborative effort between the client and the case team. This type of relationship also means Putnam is able to acquire more interesting and impactful projects. There is variety in casework: I have been involved in projects ranging from new market opportunity assessment, product growth strategy, managed care strategy, sales force analysis, product pricing, scenarios modeling to product lifecycle planning. Each case has involved a customized and collaborative approach — understanding the client's particular need, building a set of relevant hypotheses, analyzing key issues, and providing tailored recommendations.
I love the challenge and rigorous analysis that cases at Putnam demand. In addition, the smaller size and merit-based culture has allowed me to take higher level responsibilities at a much faster pace than at many other firms. I have been happy with my experience and look forward to continued interesting and challenging workload in the future.
