Therapy Cost-Effectiveness Analysis Situation: Client was the distant second entrant into a therapeutic category against an entrenched competitor, but believed their product's better efficacy profile provided a total treatment cost advantage in the marketplace. Objective: Determine if a client's new pharmaceutical therapy demonstrated a cost effective profile when compared to standard treatment for a specific hospital-based operation. Analysis: We created a patient line-item cost database containing over one million records from a representative sample of pivotal Phase III study participants. Our research focused on the total inpatient hospital costs accrued in the first year post procedure, and separated the costs according to critical categories (pharmacy, laboratory, room & board, etc.). A quantitative analysis demonstrated statistically significant cost savings in favor of our client's product. Further detailed analysis uncovered specific clinical events which correlated directly to substantially increased costs for the competitive product and explained the reason for the observed cost difference. The sales force was trained on the analysis and key messages. Result: Study results were presented at major worldwide scientific conferences and published in the leading industry peer reviewed journal. Within one year of completion, our client increased its share from 34% to 50% of new prescriptions in the category.
